Adelaide Cabaret Festival

ENEWS | 12 JUNE

Dear Cabaret Aficionado,

The crowds donned their finery for last Friday’s Festival opening. It was a night of glitz and glamour and a wonderful celebration of all things cabaret! Did you walk the red carpet? Check out the photos to see if our photographers snapped you in your tux or sequins.

The Variety Gala Performance raised the curtain on this year’s Festival. As always, it was a fantastic taster of the incredibly diverse acts on offer this year. Rachel Beck shone as Miss Saigon, European Cabaret superstar Sven Ratzke unleashed his inner diva, and Melanie Safka transported us all back to Woodstock in 1969.

My personal highlight was awarding the 2014 Cabaret Icon Award to the legendary Rhonda Burchmore. She was taken completely by surprise and was a gorgeous, gracious and totally deserving winner.

Watch our highlights video to catch all of the action from opening night.

With one week behind us, there’s still plenty of excitement in store for audiences. Don’t miss Tim Freedman’s intimate tribute to Harry Nilsson, New York Composer Scott Evan Davis’ brand new musical, Picture Perfect, the mischievous cabaret for kids, Still Awake Still!, David Campbell performing songs by Broadway composer John Bucchino, and the incomparable king of cabaret, Paul Capsis, in Little Bird. Plus our late night Backstage Club is the perfect place to kick on after an evening of cabaret. Come and join the party!

Every Second

every-second-production-page

Darlinghurst Theatre Company and Michael Sieders present a brand new Australian play
supported by AccessAustralia. Every Second by one of the country’s most daring and witty
playwrights, Vanessa Bates, will preview at the Eternity Playhouse from 27 June with the World
Premiere on 1 July.

Directed by Shannon Murphy (Bliss, This Year’s Ashes), the cast includes Simon Corfield (Torch
Song Trilogy) as Tim, Glenn Hazeldine (The Removalists) as Bill, Julia Ohannessian (Blood
Wedding) as Meg and Georgina Symes (In Between Wonderful) as Jen.

Every Second tells the story of two thirty-something couples desperate to have children. They’ve
given up sushi and champagne, as well as their sanity. Both couples discover conception is not as
easy as they once thought and assume they’re impervious to the stress of infertility.

Full of wry observations and bitter truths, Every Second takes a comedic look at a very modern
dilemma. Several years ago, in her mid-thirties, playwright Vanessa Bates discovered that she and
her partner were infertile. They embarked on the rollercoaster that is Chinese herbs, acupuncture
and IVF. “It was absurd but it was also nightmarish and draining and expensive, and I don’t just
mean that in the monetary sense,’ said Vanessa.

“At the time we felt terribly alone, none of our friends seemed to be like us. Now, it all seems
horribly common. Every Second came out of that experience.”

Director Shannon Murphy is thrilled to be bringing this play to an audience for the first time. “I
believe Vanessa to be one of our country’s greatest female playwrights. The structure of her work
and the truth and vulnerability of her characters are incredibly unique. Her talent is being
recognised overseas and I want Australia to have the opportunity to see her newest work and
experience the world premiere before it goes offshore.”

Producer ALISTAIR THOMSON and director LISA FRESHWATER are thrilled to announce that their new independent theatre company THE THEATRE DIVISION will produce the Sydney Premiere season of RUTHLESS! THE MUSICAL, playing an exclusive three-week season from 20 June to 5 July 2014 as part of The 2014 Reginald Season at The Seymour Centre.

Winner of the New York Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, RUTHLESS! is a razor sharp send-up of the entertainment business, full of witty one- liners, bright, brassy show tunes and ingenious plot twists. RUTHLESS! turns housewives into movie stars, grandmothers into grand dames, and children into sociopaths, all the while parodying Broadway and Hollywood classics Gypsy, Mame, The Women, The Bad Seed and All About Eve.

The Sydney premiere of this hilarious dark comedy stars an all-female cast featuring musical theatre favourites KATRINA RETALLICK, MEREDITH O’REILLY, MARGI DE FERRANTI and CAITLIN BERRY, with the iconic GERALDINE TURNER as Broadway critic Lita Encore.

THE THEATRE DIVISION is an emerging independent theatre company established in 2014 by producer Alistair Thomson and director Lisa Freshwater to develop, produce and tour popular, innovative live entertainment.

Productions will range from intimate solo shows and regional tours to concerts and large-scale theatrical productions. THE THEATRE DIVISION is the culmination of Thomson and Freshwater’s creative partnership that has seen the production of the charity concerts Raise the Roof! and Hats Off! and the Launchpad cabaret seasons. Freshwater directed the new Australian musicals Every Single Saturday and Life Force and Thomson produced the Sydney premiere of Follies at the SOH.
